Tips and Advice
Thailand is a Buddhist country where Buddha images are held sacred. Sacrilegious acts are punishable by imprisonment even if committed by foreign visitors. Never wear shorts to temples. When in Rome do as the Romans do!
Thai people hold their King and Queen and the Royal Family in great reverence, and so won’t tolerate foreigners talking about them in any disrespectful way. Don’t defile in any way objects bearing images of the royal family. The currency bears images of the king.
Be very, very careful when you cross the street. Do not assume that if the streetlight is green you can go ahead. If anything lift your survival instincts higher as late runs at the changing lights are common. Vehicles have right of way over pedestrians so a zebra crossing is no more an expression of art than a safe passageway for the pedestrian.
Be respectful to any authority, especially to the police officials. They have more power here than in Western countries and the local lock-ups are places to very much avoid. At all costs don’t aggravate any situation. Remain calm, think logically and at all times with the end game in mind. Money helps.
Upon entering a Thai house, you’re expected to remove your shoes.
Dress properly when entering a Buddhist temple. Mini-skirts are not allowed. Take your shoes off before going inside the hall of worship. Ladies must not on any account touch a Buddhist monk, give things direct to him or receive things direct from him.
Be very careful with your passport and visa for Thailand. If you extend your stay in Thailand you should know that this is possible only at the Immigration points. For a one time extension you can apply at an immigration point in big cities (and yes you can do it in Pattaya). After that you will have to leave the Kingdom of Thailand. There is no problem with that as there are plenty of one day visa trips to Cambodia or Myanmar. We can help with all these things.
Only Safe Sex! Do not, in any circumstances, have sex with a “bar girl” without taking all the precautious. Be careful as the condoms are very bad even if they wear the trademark of big companies. It is a good advice to bring condoms from your own country if you are a western traveller on a “sex trip”. The local condoms are small. Be advised that condoms do not protect you 100% against STD including HIV and AIDS.
Sex with minors carries a healthy jail term.
Punishment for drugs’ possession (even in a small quantity for a foreigner) is death or something very close to it!
The hotel reminds all its guests that they are guests in the country and to conduct themselves accordingly. Be respectful to thai culture and its institutions ,images and icons. Don’t talk in anger and raise your voice-even though you’re ready to explode and don’t believe the newly found love of your life has been in Pattaya for only 2 weeks and the motor bike taxi man that just dropped her off is only that He’s most likely her boyfriend as well as a singer in the local Thai karaoke bar! If you get past that and then get invited to ‘go to the village’ go into full jungle training and dress in the latest combat gear. This is high end battle time and total preparation is required. If you want to know more about how all this works the hotel counselling team of specialists can assist.
Driving a car or a motorcycle (especially a motorcycle) in Thailand can be dangerous. There are basically no rules except following the line of traffic that is apparently going in your direction. Our management has survived many years by simply employing defensive driving techniques. Expect traffic (especially motorcycles) coming on your part of the road from the opposite direction. Pay attention to taxis as they stop suddenly or change the direction without giving any signal. The bigger the vehicle the greater the right of way. If you are not sure of what of how to handle the whole driving thing get a local. You’re supposed to have an international driving license but if not have a 100 baht note ready to provide to the intercepting officers favorite charity.
And we wish you good luck…..
